Design Overview
Good design is what makes marketing effective. Once you know your target audience and the key messages, design takes over and implements the medium part of the marketing triangle.

Good design is everywhere and so is bad design. Whether you do it yourself or hire someone to manage the process for you, there are two keys:
  • A pretty design by itself is not enough
  • The design must enhance the message and be appropriate to the target audience

That said, there are many ways to go about creating stylish design. You can spend hours of your own time manipulating Photoshop or InDesign (or another layout program). You can ask your cousin or a friend of a friend to help you out. Or you can hire a professional. Each of these methods can work just fine, depending on the result you want to achieve.

Hiring a professional who'll stand back and objectively evaluate your marketing goals and design for those goals is almost always the best business decision.

Doing it yourself can save you money, but what's your time worth? The 10 hours you spend creating a business card may cost you more than spending a couple hundred to have a professional spend an hour or two designing it for you.

Asking a relative or friend to help you out can also save you money, but effective design has clearly state your message in a way that's appropriate to your target audience. That requires expertise with marketing as well as in design.

"This is a smart business decision that'll save you money--you must have a well-defined central message before making an investment in website or collateral development, or you'll find yourself endlessly revising your materials." -Entreprenuer.com
